Episode 32: The Following…

Published on August 4th, 2011

This week, we look at movie trailers. We outline the history of the movie trailer, discuss how Alex thinks that modern movie trailers seem to be actively trying to hurt the movies. We also have a contest to see who can care about Lord of the Rings the least, and engage in the much-hyped high five.

Episode 32: The Following Preview has Been Approved for All Audiences

The mp3 version can be found here.

And now, as promised, a parade of YouTube movie trailer links! First, the always-delightful Alfred Hitchcock steps in to give us a tour of the Bates Motel.

James discusses the one film Stephen King ever directed, Maximum Overdrive. Here is a pretty obvious reason why he never tried again.

We talk about how the idea for the Femme Fatale trailer that was about 1000 times better than the actual movie. You be the judge (or just trust us, because nobody other than Alex watched that piece of shit).

Here is the first trailer for Spider-Man, which was pulled after 9/11.

Alex talks about how The Fighter had a shitty trailer and a good one. First is the awful, exposition and spoiler-filled first trailer, and the second, far more interesting trailer can be found below it. The second trailer gives the feeling of Mickey’s battle against his own family, without giving away too much of the plot.

Alex also talks about how the trailer for Blue Valentine is so good that it almost renders the actual movie redundant. Here is its trailer.

And now, to relieve you from the depression that is the Blue Valentine trailer, we give you some comedy. Below you will find two recut trailers: one for a romantic comedy version of The Shining and, well, Brokeback to the Future.

The Blue Valentine trailer makes me a little weepy. Even though the movie made me want to punch hipsters in the face because it’s a movie about idiots being idiots.

a spaceship themed room in a sex hotel though? best thing. ever.
